Feeding Quality Forum

Agriculture is a game of ups and downs. A long-running joke in ag circles is that any time states pass laws banning gambling it means they’ll have to stop farming.

But, all jokes aside, leaders in the cattle feeding industry are looking to the future with optimism. That’s why, when over 100 members of the livestock industry gathered in Garden City on Thursday for a Roto-Mix sponsored feeding forum, the brightness of the future was a key topic.

“We at Roto-Mix are very, very optimistic about where the industry is heading,” said Roto-Mix President Mike Hilderbrand, who emceed the event. “While other industries are struggling, we’re expanding.”

Speakers at the event included Dan Basse, president of AgResource Company; Gaylen Erickson, Feedlot Extension Specialist at University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Derrell Peel, Livestock Marketing Economist at Oklahoma State University; several feedlot managers; and Temple Grandin, professor at Colorado State University.

At the Feeding Quality Forum in Omaha on Tuesday, Janet Riley, Senior V.P., public affairs, American Meat Institute, also spoke.

The lunch featured the Certified Angus Beef brand and honored David Bechtol, DVM, the 2013 Industry Achievement Award winner.

Beef Empire Days Coming Up

Good afternoon!

Summer is right around the corner. In southwest Kansas, that means that Beef Empire Days is coming up!

Beef Empire Days is a celebration of the beef industry in Garden City, Kansas. There are numerous events that take place from May 17 through June 30. (For a complete schedule, here’s the Beef Empire Days website.)

Roto-Mix is a proud sponsor of Beef Empire Days. Each year, the Roto-Mix Cattlemen’s Steak Cookout feeds a crowd of hundreds at the Finney County Fairgrounds. (Read a story about last year’s cookout from The Garden City Telegram here: http://tinyurl.com/becyvvr)

This year, the cookout is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. June 4 at the Finney County Fairgrounds.

Mike Hilderbrand, Roto-Mix president, said last year’s cookout served around 850 steaks. The event is free to the public and takes place during the Merck Animal Health Live Show.

This is the 14th year in a row that Roto-Mix has sponsored the event.

If you’re around southwest Kansas the first week of June, come on out to Beef Empire Days. And enjoy the steak!
